PiPixel - a few questions

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding the PiPixel as I think it might fit my needs for my project.

  1. What power inputs can it take?

  2. Can it power the Raspberry Pi via GPIO?

  3. What is the power output to the LEDs?

  4. Is it available yet?

  5. Where can I buy one (UK)?

Thanks in advance.

/Dan

Hey Dan,

No problem

  1. It has a 2.1/5.5mm barrel jack (positive tip), standard size for most basic power supplies, as well as a 2-pin screw terminal. Either can be used to connect power.

  2. No, because it also supports > 5V LED strips and, therefore, that could go badly. Though you’re not the first person to ask. v2 will probably be 5V only and power via GPIO. What I usually do is power with 5V via the barrel jack, then cut about 4" off a micro USB cable and wire it’s red and black wires to that 2-pin screw terminal. Then plug into the micro USB power port on the Pi.

  3. It supports 6A max output. And you can do 5v, 12v, and 24v strips as noted above.

  4. Yep: https://www.tindie.com/products/ManiacalLabs/pipixel-raspberry-pi-led-strip-hat/ - Curious. Where did you come across it?

  5. See above. We ship world-wide.
